Chioma speaks mind

By Jide OkonjoPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

There has been a lot of conversation about marriage and where the institution is headed as the generations come along. Statistically, we are seeing a rise in people, especially younger, expressing no desire to get married and the question for many people about this is why?

Nigerian media personality, business woman, and reality tv star Chioma Ikokwu is opening up about her theory about why young people are not marrying and why the trend is going to keep happening with people not marrying. Here's what Chioma had to say.

Speaking about why young people won't get married the way older generations did, Chioma Ikokwu said:

CHIOMA IKOKWU: Women are so independent, so the kind of nonsense that our parents and grandparents put up with, nobody is dealing with that anymore because we don't have to. Any man comes with his nonsense, you kick him out! Next! Back in the day, women were so dependent on men financially, so they had no choice but to put up with the nonsense.

Older generation, a lot of them got married because it was the norm. Society expected it. You needed to be dependent on your husband. There weren't really other methods of producing children. You had to do the traditional method of doing it with your husband. You couldn't just have a kid out of wedlock because people would think you're a bad girl.

Right now, what's happening is that Gen Z are not going to get married. A lot of them are not, because they're going to realize there's no need. There's actually no point. Every single thing that marriage brings about, which is like maybe security financially, as a woman you can make your own money. Procreation, right now, as a woman, you can have your own kids. You don't need to be married to have kids, make money, or be successful.

So really and truly, what is the marriage? All you need is really just companionship and you don't have to be married to get companionship. So they're not going to get married. Trust me. You'll see.
