Burning Eye

For What Comes Back Challenge

eat the sun,

eat her whole—

the most powerful force

in our universe,

healer and destroyer

.

encircle her,

blind her

with your body—

eager she was

as your paths crossed

.

cover her brightness,

her warmth—

the very essence

of her impact

on us lowly beings

.

covet her

for but a fleeting moment,

as she is bound to you

.

leave just a trace,

a rough-sketched outline

of her inflamed majesty—

shadow her in your might,

little by little

devour her whole,

as she longs

for your shadow over her

.

in darkness we trust—

the light will return

.

in darkness

we are assured of it

.

in darkness you rule,

your delight

increasing her desire

to break free

from your hold

.

part ways

as equals—

celestial bodies

of grace and power

.

bid her adieu

as she gave you

what you desired

.

petered out

she never was,

though you tried

.

savour every second

you spent together—

like passing ships,

star-crossed lovers

divided by happenstance

and gravity

.

stare into her bright,

never-ending beauty—

strength, radiance,

resilience—her gifts

.

ease yourself away

after your tryst,

as she—

the burning eye of heaven—

reclaims herself

.

and returns

This is awesome! Feels totally cosmic! Excellent word choice throughout, you painted some very vivid pictures in my mind :) I also like how you characterized these heavenly bodies, made them feel alive

This would make the Bard blush with pride and deservedly so. This is an amazing poem and a stunning entry to the challenge. I loved every line but the finale really clinched it for me: ease yourself away after your tryst, as she, the burning eye of heaven, reclaims self I cannot express how much I wish I had dreamed the metaphor of the sun as the burning eye of heaven, Paul. I'm literally green with envy.

  • Excellent… really great having more detail/depth of their tale in the acrostic🤩
