Come near

Lend me your ear

Allow me to tell

You an unbelievable tale

About a curse on the town

In the form of a fiery red crown

By the name of Becca Sue

With her orbs of cerulean blue

She brings a hex

On all who suspects

The truth she has hidden

Even from the soul she’s ridden

Carefully whispering seductions

With careful mental conductions

Her porcelain-hued skin

Concealing the sin within

An instrument of evil

Causing so much upheaval

Too small to raise Cain

A symbiotic relationship with Jane

Roaming through the streets

They unsettle all she meets

Leaving behind curses and bad luck

Against all who offend or acts a schmuck

The hellion she rides

Is happy to let the demon decide

Just who goes unhurt

And who’s left lying in the dirt

While the parasitic fiend is only too glad

To allow her mortal host to run rabidly mad

Like a wild animal

Acting like a cannibal

Two heathens in one

A town with nowhere to run

Supernatural tormentors

Devilish disenters

The hellish fiend possessing a child’s doll

The child who heeds the malevolent call

Where one is, the other will be also

When one leaves, the other will go

One carried tenderly, of course

While the other is a packhorse

They enjoy causing trouble

This dastardly couple

Full of mayhem

The only way to stop them

Was to destroy their bond

That was diabolically spawned

The day the doll was sewn

With hair freshly hewn

From Jane’s locks

And making Becca Sue’s frocks

Before painting her lips with witch’s blood

Creating the monstrous flood

From the malicious incarnate

Evil deeds of the fiendish discarnate

Planning to tear down the town’s walls

By using a little girl to take the fall

Good Morning, Mother! I've been meaning to say for a while now, thank you for all the likes. You are invariably the first to look over a new piece of mine, and this is greatly appreciated! I've been away from Vocal for a bit, to sort out a new job, but it was past time I revisited yours to have a look at your works. First off, I really love this well-deserved Top Story! There's so much going on in it to invoke scary folktales of yore (and I know such stories of long ago are one of your specialities!), but equally as much which put me in mind of more recent sinister fantasies from the world of film and television. I don't know much about Game of Thrones, but Becca Sue called to mind the villainess in The Little Norse Prince, for example, whilst the creepy doll was like Coraline! In other words, what's been said by literature students (over and over again) about misogyny in fairy tales overlooks the fact that we still love a scary little girl story, even to this day! Then there are the likes of Wednesday Addams, who we actually do love in a different sense, and as with all generalisations it turns out to be much more complex than the students will tell you. I'm grateful for poems like yours, which expand on and explore such matters! Meanwhile the idea of two girls in symbiosis, which lies at the core of the poem, are intriguing. This steered me in the direction of Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti, for example. Besides the storybook witchcraft and wickedness there are clearly other things going on beneath the surface here, and your poem hints at them in the most compelling style. Really enjoyed it, in other words! I shall take a look at some of your other pieces too. Thanks again for being such a faithful fan of mine!

Read again. Very nicely composed. Though I must say, I find poems harder to grasp fully.

Oh I love this, Sharon! This is what you do so well - these haunting, darkly comic almost, pieces. I love the way you brought out their symbiotic bond...I mean trouble is afoot when you use your own hair to sew on hair for your doll lol. Congrats on a sublimely creepy little Top Story! Well Deserved!
