Where You Once Were
Where are you now ? Are you here in my heart?

Where You Once Were
Your absence has a sound to it,
a hollow echo through the day,
it lingers in the things we touched,
and will not simply fade away.
I see you in the smallest ways,
a cup left where your hand had been,
a chair that keeps the shape of you,
in spaces caught between what’s seen.
The silence settles deep and slow,
it wraps itself around my chest,
and though the world moves on outside,
inside I cannot seem to rest.
How strange that love can linger on,
when everything else slips from view,
it walks beside me quietly,
as though it does not know you’re through.
I speak your name without a voice,
I feel your touch without your hand,
and though I know you are not here,
my heart still does not understand.
There are no words to close this door,
no final breath to end this pain,
for love once rooted deep in truth,
does not grow back to less again.
So I will carry what remains,
not as a wound, but something rare,
for once we stood within that light,
and lived a love stripped clean and bare.
And though your place is empty now,
and time keeps moving as it must,
there is no part of me untouched,
by what we were, by what was us.
