Is Studying for a PhD Worth it?
Are You Feeling Lost Between Work and Academia?
What do you want from your writing life?
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Two simple questions, but not easy to answer if you are struggling between balancing a career with further academic study.
Sometimes we have to make a choice in life, and it’s not easy when you feel pulled in several directions.
My name’s Lizzy and I’ve got a Teaching Degree with English, and I’m graduating this year with an MFA in Writing.
I’m one of those people who love information. I thrive when I find out new knowledge, no matter what it is. I get this thrill when I discover more, and I feel pulled in the direction of further study.
Are you like me and are drawn to new experiences and knowledge?
My next step would be a PhD, but college is expensive and I wonder if it’s worth it. I’ve emailed my professors with a proposal for a PhD study with the title:
How does traumatic events affect individuals learning, from a personal, societal level? What can we do to reduce this effect?
Whenever I write, I’m drawn to the field of neuropsychology, which is the field of the relationship between behavior, emotion and cognition at the same time as studying brain function.
How do traumatic experiences make us act, think and feel the way we do? What is going on inside the brain? What can society do to help?
What are your passions in life? Where do you see your talents take you in the coming months and years?
For those of you who are reading this that have a PhD, what was your experience? Did it enhance your career? How did it change your life?
I guess what I’m really asking is, how do you choose between work and study when both pull you in equal measure?
My name is Lizzy. I’m a trauma survivor, a wife, a mom, a teacher, and an author.

An MFA used to be a terminal degree, so I would say no, unless you already have a dissertation idea that’s at least partially developed.
