Cam was excited to hang out with his friends on the basketball court after school. The sun shone brightly in the sky, making it the perfect day to shoot hoops with the boys. He was a very competitive person and always would play to win. There was no let's play a quick game for fun with Cam. He was not very good at losing and would break ankles to be sure he would come out on top. He had a solid group of friends who would play a few basketball games on the courts every day after school and everyone who played had the same competitive mentality as Cam.

Just then two men burst into the room and grabbed the girls. “Sashi!” Ize cried fighting to get loose. “Ize!” Sashi cried fighting to get to the only sense of family she had left. The girls were put in separate cells but close enough for them to hear each other. Sashi could hear Ize crying out loud. “Ize, Kulungile; YA zdes'. Ukhuselekile!” Sashi said, trying to reassure her. “Sa-Sashi?” Ize said through sobs “Ingaba ty?” “Da. Ndim. Vy udarilis’?” Sashi whispered. “Hayi: Ty?” Ize replied in the whisper.

After the general left, I brewed a pot of strong coffee, preparing to battle with the graveyard in my mind. Sipping the hot brew, I gingerly peeled back the cover of my war crimes folder. Arrayed on top of the paperwork were photographs taken of the children from a different angle than I had on them. They were alive and playing in the bright Afghanistan sunshine. From my sniper’s nest, I hadn’t been able to focus in on their little faces. They were simply small figures in brightly colored clothing. The dimples, the happy eyes, and the toothy smiles reminded me of Timmy, and it rattled me to the core.
