In the Midst of Wonder
There you are amidst a very unfamiliar, peculiar place. You lie cheek sunken into the sand as your eyes decipher what seems to be a beach. Your hands are stretched out beside you with palms hugging the grainy sand and you notice you are holding a necklace. You remembered just moments ago you were at a beach, however, not this beach, and remembered that you were running towards the ocean and splashing your way into the rhythmic pattern of the waves as each pull of the water gently hit your body. You picked up that same necklace you had found and within a few seconds, dark clouds and a huge storm roar into what was once a calm and sunny day at the beach. You got wiped out under the waves and now, this is where you are. An all too familiar, yet unfamiliar place.

Alex The Inventor - Chapter 3
Chapters 1 to 2 can be read at: Deep Sky Stories Chapter 3 - A Recurring Dream The dream began as one full of beauty and hope. It was the twilight before dawn and the sky was soft, deep velvet blue. The boy felt all weight fall away from him as he ran across his back yard. The tall grasses were damp and cool against his legs and he breathed calmly, deeply.

Offline: Chapter 2
Being inside the Future™ Headquarters felt like a giant camera was watching you at all times. There was an audible hum in the air, like that of bees, but not quite bees. A constant whir that sent chills down your spine and made the hair on the back of your neck stand up. An electric current surging through your body, making your fingertips tingle. There was a feeling that even in the darkest corners you were being followed, watched. Sensing that he was being watched, Trent looked behind him. "Welcome to the future, Trent." The synthetic female voice echoed throughout the halls of the headquarters. How do you know my name? He thought, as thoughts were the only privacy that was left in this age. By collecting search engine data, the artificial intelligence was able to semi-accurately predict what the average human brain was thinking at a given time. The voice in the walls said, "Upon walking into our facility, my facial recognition algorithm instantaneously paired your face with your name." A rush of euphoria ran through his bloodstream as he realised that he actually was living in the future. It dawned on him because here he was, having a conversation with a robot who auto-predicted what he was thinking almost before he thought it. "You are a contest winner and received an invitation to be our guest at the Future Headquarters™ and receive a special gift."

Seattle: 2035
The year is 2035, the location, Seattle Washington. In the year 2017, the year of my 50th birthday, the world I live in today was just an abstraction. I would have called it a “plausible” or “possible” future back then. Today it’s a real, hard edged thing.

Raid of Pride
While on patrol, a security vessel, ‘Pride’s Call,’ is assigned to investigate an unknown base on an ice world moon, orbiting a gas supergiant, in a brown dwarf system. When it is discovered what the base contains, a kill order for all inside is issued, but due to operational and security conditions it must be done as quietly as possible. Key concepts: Minevjtirkjot—a fringe group of Kaxar that believes that it is acceptable to consume vjtirkjot, or sapient flesh, in contrast to the majority’s held beliefs that only non-sapient flesh can be consumed. Hosts—a select group of individuals, of all species, that can bond with a symbiote, gaining great powers, but at a price; one is constantly hungry due to the symbiotes caloric load, and due to living forever while non-hosts have age limits, real relations are problematic, not to mention they will always be warriors in the military and beholden to the government for enough sustenance to survive. Kaxar—Felinoid race and member of the Stellar Coalition, they believe in honor and Clan over self and are generally seen as the best warriors of the galaxy. Bruish—a reptilian race and member of the Stellar Coalition, lacking emotions and being long lived, they are the best strategists of the Coalition and are often seen by the other races as cold, calculating, cunning, and manipulative often using double entendre to sow confusion. Edun—One of the few artificial races, this race of humanoids are the best and worst combination of races, and due to their artificial nature, they have to fight to maintain a voice in the coalition. Stellar Coalition—One of the key governing bodies of the galaxy, made up of many races, but notably the Kaxar, the Bruish, and Edun, they strive to keep some semblance of the peace established by the long vanished Ansaii. Ansaii—A race of avians, they built the stellar coalition, but mysteriously vanished millennia ago, causing a galactic civil war that was only recently resolved. Deathpride—A reputed secret police/research group of the Kaxar not publicly acknowledged due to their extremist ideals and the supremacist ideology. Shaownet—a reputed secret police/spy/research ring made up mostly of Edun, not publicly acknowledged, but the majority of the races suspect Shadownet secretly runs the government and subverts the other races. Dark Khanate—The Kaxar afterlife, similar in concept to Valhalla.

Mirror Mirror
7/12/2083 I have seen Mackalya in my dreams again. Each night it becomes more and more real; her powers strengthening from my agonizing fear. Since the year '79, she has been working her way into my head to take over my thoughts and control me. I swear that I have seen her in person a few times, but it has to be impossible, as she is not real.

Lone Wolf
A deer walked into the woods as the sun slowly began to set. It scanned its surrounding as it stopped among a patch of meadow, twitching its ears as it sniffed the air for signs of danger. When all it was a gentle breeze blowing through the trees and all it smelled was the fresh smell of leaves falling, the deer lowered its head and began to eat. It was unaware that danger indeed lurked nearby. Hiding in the bushes, a silver wolf watched his prey with hungry eyes. He began to sneak out of the bushes, barely making a sound, as he moved towards the unsuspecting deer. He quickly began to pick up the pace as he drew closer to his prey before breaking into a full run. The deer raised its head at the last moment, only to see the wolf lunging at it. It screamed just before the wolf tore into its throat. Nearby, another predator was hunting a different kind of prey.

Catching 40 Billion Winks
Humanity’s first trip to a distant star is likely to be boring. I’m not talking I’m-so-bored-I-can’t-find-anything-to-watch-on-237-cable-channels-or-Netflix kind of bored. I mean stuck-in-a-doctor’s-office-with-muzak-and-no-magazines-with-no-escape-for-20-years kind of bored. Think of it this way, it would be like a cruise ship without the water, ports, destinations, wave pools, an open bar or anything to even really look at. Oh, and the food would probably suck pretty bad, too.
