Book Review: "A Meaningful Life" by L.J Davis
The New York Review of Books classics series has always been great for discovering new writers and works by writers you wouldn't have even thought about. There's books about authors, there's books on the topic of war, of identity and everything in between. A short time ago, I wrote my article on my favourite books of the series and yet, I don't think I'm even halfway through digging through the publications. Since they keep coming out with new ones, I have always had something obscure to read. A Meaningful Life is about a man, upon turning thirty, chooses to take a look at how his life hasn't really gone quite the way he planned. He definitely feels as though it is slipping through his fingers.

Life of Albus Dumbledore
Albus Dumbledore was born to Percival and Kandra Dumbledore. His full name is Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore. He had one brother and one sister who he loved even though they didn’t feel his love. In 1891, Ariana Dumbledore Albus’s sister got attacked by three muggle boys that caused her not to want to do magic and put her in hiding. Percival Dumbledore killed those muggles for hurting his daughter and went to Azkaban for it. This caused the Dumbledore’s to move to Godric’s Hollow where no one would know them or have known Ariana before the attack.

The Story of Tom Marvolo Riddle
The story of Tom Marvolo Riddle is an interesting one that has a lot of loopholes where we don’t know what happened, but I will try my best to summarize it with some help from Albus Dumbledore. Riddle’s story starts before he was born in a town called Little Hangleton in a shack type place where his grandfather Marvolo, uncle Morfin, and mother Merope, so we can assume that they didn’t have a lot of money. Their last name was Gaunt and they were direct descendants of Salazar Slytherin who was a powerful wizard known for a pureblood family line. We can assume that the family was rich but the family before them spent it all and left them with barely any. Power and blood purity were more important to Marvolo than his children and his son was more important to him than his daughter. Marvolo’s daughter was neglected and probably felt alone, so she started to fancy a muggle who lived in the town, a handsome rich man named Tom Riddle.

Ariana Dumbledore
Ariana Dumbledore is not a very well known character of the Harry Potter series. Her story starts when she was six or seven years old. She was like any young witch at that age figuring out that she was magical and not a squib. If anything I bet her parents were really happy about that. I mean no one wants to be known as the family who has a squib. Ariana was in the backyard of their house one day when a couple of muggle boys were spying on her from behind some bushes while she was practicing and figuring out her magic abilities. They caught her and commanded her to do it again, but when she couldn’t, because magic doesn’t work that way for a six or seven-year-old, they laughed at her and called her names which scarred her for life. Her father ran after the boys who made his only daughter feel sad and killed them which he was sent to Azkaban for but no one knew why he killed them.

This is the story of the Deathly Hallows which in The Tale of Beatle the Bard is the story “The Tale of the Three Brothers” is where the Deathly Hallows are explained. There is nothing better than walking down a path in the woods with your brothers. That is what these brothers were doing on what they thought was a normal day. Now, these brothers were grown, they weren’t children so they were fine. They came to a river that they couldn’t cross without a bridge so they took out their wands and created a bridge so they could cross the river.

Defense Against the Dark Arts Position
The Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts was cursed until Lord Voldemort died at least that is what people think since it was he who put a curse on the position. When Tom Riddle was a few years out of Hogwarts when he went back to see that Albus Dumbledore was now Headmaster who knew what Riddle might be up to at that moment. Riddle was rejected from this job so he put a curse on it where when a person teaches in that position it is only for one year. The only ones that we know about who only stayed for one year are the teachers Harry had during his years at Hogwarts.

Dolores Umbridge
Dolores Umbridge is a cruel lady who was one of the many Defense Against the Dark Arts professors. Her life was mostly her being selfish and wanting to be with powerful people. She was born to a wizard named Orford Umbridge and a muggle named Ellen Cracknell which would make Dolores a Half-Blood. Half-Bloods are ok. I mean they are respected, but not to the standards that Dolores wanted. She wanted to be respected like the Pure-Blood families of the Wizarding World. Dolores is the oldest and only daughter of her parents, and they also had another child, a boy who was born a squib. Now her dad blamed his wife for his son being a squib and Orford and his wife separated. Ellen and her son went to live in the muggle world while Dolores and Orford went to live among the wizarding communities. She was embarrassed by her father because of his lack of ambition for a new job.
