Spring's greetings, my fellow opinionated people! (*) I would like you to know: at this very moment, I am sitting in my favorite sports bar, sipping a beer, and watching professional basketball out of my periphery -- and due to the growing (and for some, paralyzing) fear of the coronavirus, this place is about half as busy as it usually is. Which means easier parking and priority seating, which is totally cool with me. I guess. But it has me thinking: if it comes to me being stuck at home in the near future, whether due to illness or work shutdown, which films would be my Chicken Soup for the Soul, as 'twere? Where might I run to first, to flee the binge-watching of super-TV, and find my happy place buried deep under the rising waters of preoccupation (and lack of work)? Where I landed was a universe filled with rollicking soundtracks and bodies dancing unencumbered...

Rental Shops were better than streaming.
Media consumption has changed so many times in my lifetime. I've personally never been very big on theater going. I always seem to get a tall person sitting right in front of me, even in an empty room. I do love stories and generally dislike people, so the ability to take in media within my own space is the best. I remember getting my weekend NES game from the local video rental shop or even the grocery store. That then moved into the more franchised options with Blockbuster and Family Video where I would grab a week's worth of DVDs for less than ten bucks. Now we have streaming services that pour into almost every device you have in your home. In recent years though consuming media just hasn't been as enjoyable as I remember from my younger years. So I would like to talk about the things that the streaming wars are losing me with.

For the Love of Life
When I first discovered journalist, novelist and now podcaster Touré on MTV2, I became an instant supporter. I admired his thorough work ethic and ability to never allow his subjects to railroad him. His questions penetrated without him pestering. He injected into his narrative a sense that he could cajole an answer out of a singer, rapper, race car driver, or tennis player with eloquence and aplomb. All the while, he separated the figure from their story in order to avoid subjectivity.

Where the Universal 'Dark Universe' Went Wrong
It all started with Iron Man. No, Iron Man is not Universal Studios, nor is it a monster movie. Yes, I am aware of both of those facts. Nevertheless, it started with Iron Man. Marvel did something that many did not think could be done well. A cinematic universe, a network of independent films that locked together and gave rise to a story that would span an entire decade. Other studios looked upon Marvel and Disney with envy, unable to replicate what they had done. The truth is, the formula was there, they were just too impatient to use it.
