Dusk Falls
Written and published for the 'What Comes Back" challenge.
I couldn’t tell you the exact amount of days,
Only that it’s been over a year.
-
Uninvited, though it was,
It was only a matter of time
Until the sun
that lit my way forward
Through life’s lonely, paved streets
Once more shut its eyes
To drift into its slumber.
And the almost instantaneous fall of night
Became present once more.
-
The night cycles here
Are just as unpredictable as the days.
Sometimes they only last a few hours.
Sometimes the darkness
Looms for several days.
The most recent time around,
The obscurity lasted
Well over a month.
-
Any hope I’d felt
From daylight’s final traces that lingered
Was no longer visible
And far from any reach
Of my gaze or my thoughts.
-
Happiness and hope
Had brightened my day for too long.
Every friend I had.
My safety nets.
My entire support system,
Once in plain view and lit abright,
Are all now completely invisible to me once again.
-
A bleak reminder that,
As morning always comes,
So too does dusk.
