Unofficial Challenge: Time Traveler Poetry for National Poetry Month

A Journey Through Time, One Poem at a Time

Time travel

April is National Poetry Month, a time to celebrate creativity, expression, and the power of words. To honor the month, you are invited to participate in an unofficial poetry challenge.

This challenge explores the theme of time travel through poetry. Each submission must take place in a different time period, allowing writers to stretch their imagination across history and beyond. You might choose to write about the ancient past, the present day, the distant future, or even an alternate timeline that exists only in your imagination.

Participants are encouraged to immerse readers in the chosen era. An optional twist is to include subtle historical or futuristic details that enhance the authenticity and atmosphere of the poem.

Great poets throughout history have helped shape the world of poetry in unique and lasting ways. Writers such as Sappho, Rumi, Pablo Neruda, and Matsuo Basho each captured the spirit of their time while influencing generations to come. As you journey through time in this challenge, you may draw inspiration from poets like these or imagine the worlds they lived in. Your words can become part of the ever-evolving story of poetry.

Submission guidelines are as follows. Only one entry per writer. Each poem must be between 100 and 200 words. Entries should be original and written specifically for this challenge. Participants must mention and embed the link to this challenge beneath their poem and include a link to their submission in the comments for review.

The deadline for submissions is May 1st. Winners will be announced on May 12th.

Judging will not be conducted by me, instead, entries will be reviewed by an English professor, an author, and a linguistics professor to ensure a fair and thoughtful evaluation.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries. First place will receive a 20-dollar tip. Second place will receive a 10-dollar tip. Third place will receive a 5-dollar tip.

Winners will be selected based on creativity, originality, and how effectively the poem captures its chosen time period.

Step beyond the present and let your words travel through time.

Good luck to all who enter!

  • I’m an author who always did well in English. I speak Americanized English, cop, Army, some Spanish, and can cuss at you in German and Korean. So… do I get to judge next time? 🤗😉😎

  • Might have to come up with something for this

Ok. You wrote..." Each submission must take place in a different time period, allowing writers to stretch their imagination across history and beyond". Yet its one to each of us. Does it mean I can't write about what someone else already wrote. Kind of ambiguous you see. I love the prompt, btw.
