I never expected to become an avid runner. When I was younger I dreaded the idea of running, complaining endlessly in gym class, and shrugging off the exercise as nothing. I could never stand the pacers test (a routine in gym class where you had to run and see how many levels you could achieve in the allotted time). Now, I have come to love running.

Learning to breathe:
Scales are my nemesis. Not because I truly struggle with weight, thanks for birdlike genetics on my mother’s side, but because generally speaking, as I approach my mid-40’s my weight has decided to settle comfortably in a “healthy” zone, and just hang out. I used to monitor the numbers with an eagle eye, frantically trying to evaluate the impact of dietary changes, workouts, etc.. to no avail. The only adjustment was upward, as I inevitably fell victim to the Corona relapse. But even that was lackadaisical, as if the even effort of gaining weight seemed like too much work.

The Paradox of Running
A knot starts to tighten in my stomach as I tie the final knot in the laces of my running shoes. Here comes the internal battle I face every time I set out for a training run. On the outside I look like a runner with my hair in a ponytail, my Brooks running shoes, and my Lululemon running pants (just kidding, I'm a teacher, my running pants are from Target.) Electronic Stallion
Little droplets definitely expel from my mouth. But I’m all alone. No mask. No six feet distancing. It’s just me in my electronic stallion: the household ready stationary bicycle. Run Because You Want To
Coming up on my 6th anniversary as a runner, my partner asked me what I’ve learned in my years running. As I scroll back through the memories - my first race, my first half marathon, running along the Mediterranean, running along Lake Austin - I am hit with a tiny remnant of the feeling of each run. From the beginning, running had it’s rewards and it’s cost, it’s triumphs and defeats. I’d like to think I’ve improved, or at least stopped making so many mistakes. Running used to be something I had to do rather than something I got to do. Now, I am free when I run. I am capable when I run. I accomplish something every run.
